I suppose that each and every one of you has been at least once checked when you applied for a job. Searching for public arrest records has become one of the steps towards employing a new person in a company. Why? Liability, that’s why.
What Is Employment Background Check?
A pre – employment background check is a screening; it is mainly conducted to test the information about a potential employee. And, of course, the accuracy of that applicant’s claims from the resume, criminal background, sanctions and workers compensation claims.
There are a lot of reason why employers prefer to do an accurate background check, and they vary from one company to the other. One thing is sure, though: people lie to get what they are after. Maybe some of them are justified, but most of them just try to hide their flaws.
One of the most important reasons for which a background check for employment stands is company liability. Once an employer hires a person of which there is no background information, that particular person becomes a liability. Fraud in the workplace can cost companies billions of standsannually. For example, in 2011, Canadian businesses lost 3.2 billions of dollars in damages because of fraud in the workplace. Billions.
Some companies conduct the employment background check themselves by using searching criminal records of the police or FBI. However, the most of them prefer to hire a third-party company. There are such companies that offer this type of services for a fee (depending on the extent and depth of the search), but you can find lots of companies that do a cheap background check.
When contacting such a company, employers must be careful. There are serious businesses that provide the information legally and thoroughly, but there are others that do no deliver what they were asked. A legitimate company will be willing to explain the entire process and get the appropriate consents.
KEEP IN MIND: Employers are required by law to ask for your permission to do a pre-employment background check. They are not allowed to bypass your consent and do it anyways if you refuse. Although, your refusal will raise a few flags and your chances to get hired are slim to none.
What do they look for in a criminal background check?
A background check by social security number can contain a whole lot of information, but it depends on the position you want to fill. If you are applying for a high-security government job…they may know what you ate on a Wednesday 3 years ago. But if you want to work on a minimum wage job, your employer may not be interested in too many things.
For reference, the background report may contain:
- a full criminal history (from mere misdemeanors to actual convictions and incarcerations)
- things concerning your citizenship and immigration
- litigation records
- DMV records
- drug tests
- education and employment records
- financial records (your credit score doesn’t matter)
- medical information
- licensing information
- military records
- social security number
Of course, a job background check may also contain any other information your potential employer is interested in.
I believe that this type of screening is necessary due to the consequences of not conducting one. It’s nothing personal. Everyone is checked. Don’t think that someone made an exception just for you because of how you look, on matters of discrimination and whatnot. When it comes to this, all people are equal, and these companies are just doing what their regulations are dictating.
Nowadays seems to be tough for one to find a job. Even though the rate of unemployment has decreased in the past few years, there are still a lot of people out there who lack a job, a mean to make an end’s meat. They are either not qualified or experienced, or they are brought down by their background information.
I don’t know if you know what that means, but it is a huge pain in the behind for our country. People living on welfare are draining the United States’ budget every single year. I know that there some people who need those money/food stamps, but come on! Give people jobs, not an excuse to stay at home.
Finding a proper job hard because of many factors. Firstly, all companies want experience in the application. That is alright, I guess, but there are hundreds of thousands of new college graduates every year. They went through 3-4 years of school for what? To send out resumes and be refused because they do not have the required experience? Why don’t the companies train these graduates? Instead, they prefer to give the job to a person who has the experience. I can understand that, but how are the new people in the workforce are going to gather experience? Not by staying at home, that’s for sure.
Arrest records on the personal background check?
Another aspect that may aggravate the quest for a job is the arrest records. I suppose you are more than aware of the United States’ crime rate. Precisely this kind of background information may make impossible getting a job. I don’t think I have to tell you why. Employers don’t want ex-cons as employees. I can’t say that I blame them. There are trust issues involved. People with national background records are not the most reliable. However, some people turn their lives around. They did a bad thing once. That doesn’t mean they are bad, unreliable people. It’s quite a pity that the system doesn’t differentiate.
Education is another reason people don’t get jobs. Yes, there are scholarships, but there aren’t enough. Take the money from social welfare and put it into education. Provide free education for everyone (that’s a good one, but one can only hope and dream). There are a lot of young people who don’t go to college and learn a trade just because it’s too damn expensive. As a result, a young person, interested in learning and school in general, will end up working (if he/she is lucky) a minimum wage job. Why? Because the system is faulty and cannot provide this essential opportunity for everyone.
As you can see, there are a few reasons for which one can not get a job. Experience, education, and public criminal records are just three of them. I can guarantee that there a few more, but these three stand out the most. People should focus their attention on this issue. Instead, they are preoccupied with all kinds of nonsense that have zero importance. Some may say that they have it coming. Not getting involved and all.
